Connection to In-class Reading
This article talks about Nelson Mandela’s life and what he had to overcome sitting in prison for twenty-seven years. It also states information about his life experiences and how life is in prison. Written in Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, A Long Walk to Freedom, he says “That day had come about through the unimaginable sacrifices of thousands of my people, people whose suffering and courage can never be counted or repaid. I felt that day, as I have on so many other days, that I was simply the sum of all those African patriots who had gone before me. That long and noble line ended and now began again with me. I was pained that I was not able to thank them and that they were not able to see what their sacrifices had wrought. The policy of apartheid created a deep and lasting wound in my country and my people. All of us will spend many years, if not generations, recovering from that profound hurt” (10). This quote explains to us his opinion on how apartheid hurt Africa and what he would have so gladly been able to do in the past but couldn't quite get it done.
Relation to Courage
The quote from A Long Walk to Freedom and the article both relate to courage because that is what pushed Nelson Mandela through imprisonment, through his presidency, and through his entire life. Courage is how he had the motivation to write all three of his books while he was in his elder years. For Mandela, losing part of his childhood, is part of becoming a man.
